WHERE MY LOVE OF SPORTS WAS BORN

Highlighting President Joey Johnson

As every craftsman has a place of solitude where they go to perfect their craft, I too found a place where I could further refine the skills of my trade -- tennis. I found an old school not far from my house with just enough space on a brick wall to practice my strokes. The wall was next to the school furnace where coal residue would be on the ground. I would hit on the wall until my once-yellow tennis balls turned black from the coal.

Hitting on this wall gave me time to self-reflect. I would ask myself questions like, "Am I capable of achieving my athletic hopes and dreams?" "Could future wins bring me peace of mind that I am enough?" Deep down, hitting on that old wall was a place where I was searching for the hope that I was worth something. It was a place where I distanced myself from my doubts and fears and lost myself in future hopes and dreams. That wall gave me something to look forward to - a feeling of hope for better things to come.

After a few years of countless reps on the wall Joey set his mind on the goal of playing college tennis. After thousands of hours of tunnel vision and hard work Joey's goal of being awarded a full-ride tennis scholarship to play college tennis became a reality. He started his college experience playing for Tyler Junior College in Tyler Texas. During this time the team won back to back National Championships and Joey was awarded the All-American status in both singles and doubles. From there he was offered a full athletic scholarship to compete for the University of Mississippi, a Division I University in the Southeastern Conference.

Along that path, resources were limited and my family life was filled with unpredictable and unexpected circumstances and challenges - never knowing if my physical and emotional needs would be met. My brothers and I were left to fend for ourselves to cope with constant neglect. The shelter we so desperately needed came in the form of a racket and yellow ball. I became a warrior on the tennis court and as I played I unleashed life's stress by pounding the ball against whoever I could compete against. It was more than a sport, it was personal. I had something to prove to myself and everyone else who stood in my way of victory.

Competition was part of my family's culture. My dad played competitive sports as a kid and he wanted his kids to have the same opportunity. I recall a talk I had with my dad as a young boy where he explained the opportunity that comes to those who compete in sports. I listened intently and decided I wanted to experience that for myself. This began a life full of work, sacrifice, and dedication to becoming the best competitor I could be!

After years of feeling dissatisfied about the lack of progress I had made I wanted to understand why I was still affected in matches by my fears and doubts. The answer to understanding my fears was through solving what I call the 'Worthiness  Dilemma.' I knew I needed to address where these fears were coming from once and for all. When I did this my game soared and I saw breakthroughs more consistently."

Joey's involvement in collegiate tennis has not ended since his youngest son Spencer Johnson now plays at UCLA as a blue chip and nationally-ranked player. Spencer was awarded the PAC-12 Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-Conference. Spencer has first hand seen the power of Worthy to Win in his own training and success.

Upon his return, Joey married, Wendy, in Huntington Beach California and together they had five children. Now, Joey lives in Southern California and runs Worthy to Win. He shares his message on the power of worthiness and solving the Worthiness Dilemma and has worked with thousands of athletes all over the world.
